20 August 2007 Translocation & GPS collar for tiger conflict - Collaboration in Action: BKSDA, STTCP (PPKHS) & WWFOn the 18th August 2007 The Sumatran Tiger Trust Conservation Programme in collaboration with WWF supported the BKSDA of Indonesia (Nature resources conservation Riau Province) in the translocation of one tiger. The adult male tiger was caught by villagers after it regularly entered Teluk Palas village, Sumatra and attacked cattle. This particular translocation is different to others regularly carried out by the teams of the Sumatran Tiger Trust because before release the tiger was to be fitted with a GPS collar. The GPS collar will provide more data and information about tiger conflict, like: when we move one tiger to another location, do the tigers go back to the location where they come from? or can they survive? There is much information we can learn from the success of this translocation. Satellite Technology is being used for the first time on tigers in Indonesia to study the animals in vast forests like Senepis, the Collar emits a GPS signal frequency, which enables the tiger’s movements to be tracked and plotted. It can provide detailed long-term information about the activities of these specific animals, how the feline population use the human-impacted landscapes in and around Senepis as well as detailed information on home range boundaries and favoured areas. The following report just in: From : Sumianto and Team It is an surprised for my team. Just in two days of beginning our activities to try out of new cameras, we have got two tiger pothos (both mele and female tigers). Not only still potho, the new cameras also film it, although just for few seconds.
