NOVEMBER 2006
Drought Crisis in Way Kambas NP during the Dry Season of 2006
From:
Sumianto and the STCP-WKNP Team
Background
An event which occurs every year,
commonly between April to October, in
Indonesia, and especially in Way Kambas NP is dry season.
This
year’s dry season has had serious effect on Way Kambas NP. Dryness of land,
high ambient temperature and low humidity have been felt, and it’s condition
make everything easy to set alight.
The
fires have seriously occurred in the areas. According to the reports from the
management of Way Kambas NP approximately 7000 hectares of forest area have been
lost to the advancing fires. But for this year we don’t get some information yet
or data about how wide the area was fired.
Combating
the Drought Crisis
As an effort to combat these extreme
conditions, several activities have been carried out by workers in the park,
coordinated by the management of Way Kambas National Park, staff of STCP, staff
of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS), and Scout Group (Saka Wana Bhakti/Pramuka).
Water Supply for Wildlife

To provide available drinking water for wildlife by water
pockets. It was put at paths of wildlife, and checked every week for water
supply.
Routine
Patrol

STCP Staff in collaboration with Staff of Way Kambas NP have
been patrolling the Park areas, and on TIMA especially. The Team used
motor cycle, speedboat, and take a walk.
During patrolling our team did find
illegal fisher, and questioned them.
Survey
In drought conditions, STCP staff still
do the survey in TIMA, and the other locations of Way Kambas NP. As well as
knowing tigers and their prey, on the ground we can check fires and the drought
effect for wildlife. From this activity we have found some
animals which have died (sambar deer and wild pig dead).
Rusa
Deer - that did not make it
Our team will continue the survey activities
throughout November.
