A WEEK On Patrol In Bukit Duabelas National Park

Orang Rimba are one of the indigenous people on Sumatra who live in Bukit Duabelas National Park.  They live in a very traditional way, the same as a long time ago before this area became establish to the conservation area.   But so far there is still very limited data and information about the lifestyle of Orang Rimba in Bukit Duabelas National Park: population, spreading, wide of farm, cultural custom and the life pattern of People in the jungle especially in Bukit Duabelas National Park.  

 

The objection of this patrol in Bukit Duabelas National Park is want to know surely and identify existence of People of their Farm (Ladang) in Bukit Duabelas National Park.

 The function of Data and information of group existence, population , daily activity and location of farm of Orang Rimba in Bukit Duabelas National Park is to increase the protection of judicially for their area  which they have been used and also to try maintaining and searching source of  his subsistence.

 In This week 20th - 27th November 2006 a group consisted of Staff of Bukit Duabelas National Park as a Counterpart of STT Program, Staff Of KSDA Jambi and Some Orang Rimba and Vilager in Air Hitam Vilage conduct to patrol and exploration in jungle of Bukit Duabelas National Park.

Patrol Team start from Pematang Kabau a village near the South Border of Bukit Duabelas National Park go to Tanah Garo a Vilage near North Border of the park.  Throughout  our journey we pass the forest cover which still primary, Secondary forest sekunder and bush because effect of forest exploitation and illegal farming.

 Primary Forest which still be good is generally  species of Meranti  of Dipterocarpaceae.  While Secondary Forest is generally Trees  with wide leaf like Macaranga species.

 Orang Rimba farm - they called " Berhuma" - made by slash and burning and after plantation they move to other area make a new one again.  They do “berhuma” with cutting the tress usually in May and burn it in September or October.

Combustion at the time of top of the dry season the material which burned very limited of water level so the smoke not to much and do not make a smoke pollution.  This Is a traditional Method of Orang Rimba to lessen and degrade Pollution of Smoke of effect of farm combustion.

 Plant which often planted in Ladang of orang Rimba initially is dry farming paddy, after cropping hereinafter they plant rubber crop as forerunner of his ownership of cleaner.

 Daily activity of Patrol Team besides noting and measuring the location of Ladang, to eat, bath and take a rest is also very important. Because prima health and body condition is very required among the Team.

For breakfast the team cook what they need quickly using that which we brought from outside forest, while for lunch the team prepare what they need very quickly so we can  immediately continue the journey.


Cooking Dinner 

About 17.30 PM Team Patrol discontinue activity, this moment is very importance for all of team because we will rest fully,  take a bath to clean body, praying and cooking for diner with special menu and better than breakfast or lunch.   Every once in a while we get vegetable from very delicious forest like fern, river fish and mushroom. 

This activity take place non-stopped till we pass the boundary of Bukit Duabelas National Park.

 The Length walk of patrol in this week around 42 Km, and we feel proud and happy after finding villageside or house that meaning our Patrol Activity have succeeded to go through planned route.


Illegal Logging

 

As the results from  A WEEK on patrol are :

1.      Orang Rimba Ladang which we met alongside the patrol band amount to the more or less 165 unit with large totally 229 ha.

2.      The age of the Ladang which we met is one to nine years.

3.      The Spreading of Ladang of Orang Rimba in the Patrol Band is in picture below.

4.      The activity to make a new Ladang by Orang Rimba in Bukit Duabelas National Park still done.

5.      In this patrol we do not met illegal logging activity but we have found old illegal logging activity.
